The California Milk Advisory Board (CMAB) announced the return of its annual dairy innovation competition with a new name and increased focus on advancing excellence in functional dairy product development. The Real California Milk Excelerator, the 3rd edition of the CMAB dairy product innovation competition with innovation consultancy VentureFuel, will award up to $650,000 in prizes for new dairy products that support performance and recovery benefits.

In 2020, no fewer than 67% of all new products with ‘plant-based’ claims were launched outside of these pioneering sectors. In the confectionery market, for example, more milk-free and gelatin-free products are hitting the shelves, as highlighted in a new report from Innova Market Insights. Americans are drinking less milk. Milk consumption has dropped by 40% since 1975 and the trend is accelerating as more people embrace plant-based milk alternatives such as oat, almond, rice, and coconut milk. According to the USDA annual milk consumption data, in 2018, the average person in the US consumed 146lb (17 gallons) of milk, down from 247lb (almost 29 gallons) in 1975.
