ADM/Matsutani LLC, the joint venture between Archer Daniels Midland Company, Matsutani Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., and Matsutani America, Inc., announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has included Fibersol® on its list of  approved dietary fibers. The FDA amended its list after reviewing the totality of scientific evidence, including 20 years’ worth of clinical research on the ingredient in a citizen petition filed by ADM on behalf of ADM/Matsutani LLC JV.

“ADM supports the FDA’s efforts to provide consumers with nutritional labeling information that is honest, clear and relevant,” says Greg Dodson, vice president, Fiber, ADM. “We remained confident in the totality of scientific evidence that shows Fibersol’s physiological benefit to human health and its classification as a dietary fiber. With the FDA’s decision, food and drink companies can be reassured that their products using Fibersol can continue to be labeled as containing dietary fiber and will meet the compliance date for the nutrition facts labeling final rule.”

As part of the updated Nutritional Facts Panel, the FDA redefined dietary fiber and initiated a scientific review to identify dietary fibers that have a physiological effect beneficial to human health.

“Fibersol has a large body of clinical science behind it,” notes Yutaka Miyamoto, executive vice president, Matsutani America. “The citizen petition for Fibersol presented a multitude of scientific studies conducted on Fibersol, including: post-prandial blood glucose response, post-prandial blood triglycerides response, and non-English language journals for the FDA’s review and determination of Fibersol as a dietary fiber. Once the FDA reviewed the petitions and supporting evidence, it made the decision to include digestion-resistant maltodextrin on its list of dietary fibers that have a physiological effect beneficial to human health.”

The petition was filed as docket number FDA-2016-P-2377 and may be reviewed online at www.regulations.gov

More than 20 years of clinical research and almost 100 published studies contributed to demonstrating Fibersol’s physiological benefits. These studies outline how Fibersol helps maintain intestinal regularity, attenuate post-meal blood glucose levels and retain healthy post-meal serum triglycerides. Recent studies have also shown Fibersol to be a prebiotic fiber that provides an increased feeling of satiety. In addition, many studies have confirmed that Fibersol is well tolerated, even when tested at a consumption rate as high as 68g per day.

Fibersol is a digestion resistant maltodextrin and can be labeled as “soluble corn fiber,” “soluble vegetable fiber (corn),” “digestion resistant maltodextrin,” “resistant maltodextrin” or “maltodextrin.” Each gram of Fibersol is 90% fiber, provides only 0.02g of sugar and 1.6 Kcal. It is also heat-, acid-, shear- and freeze/thaw-stable, and maintains its fiber content under those conditions, thus allowing for ultimate formulation and food processing versatility.
