With the release of the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans earlier this year followed by the US Food and Drug Administration’s new Nutrition Facts label, many changes are in store for consumer packaged goods (CPG) manufacturers. Among those changes, mainstream media has given its share of attention to one ingredient category: sugar.
Whether it’s because they’re battling a health condition, such as diabetes, or simply watching their weight, consumers are looking to avoid sugar. Meanwhile, certain sweetener alternatives have fallen out of public favor (justifiably so, or not).
Consumers are more sophisticated than ever in their ingredient knowledge, and Cargill feels the industry must respond “by providing beverages made with high-quality products that deliver on promises.”
Natural sweeteners derived from the stevia plant could be authorized for EU-wide use by the end of the year, after governments approved their sale in certain foodstuffs, the European Union's executive said on Tuesday.
