Beef jerky sales grew by nearly seven% last year, according to Nielsen. Meat snacks are second only to potato chips in the salty snack category, but potato chips posted only 1.7% dollar growth over the same time period.
Although consumers are not eating more animal proteins for dinner, they increasingly are eating them at more surprising dayparts, including breakfast, lunch and snacks.

Americans are snacking more, and it's leading to big opportunities for fast-moving consumer goods manufacturers. In the last year (week ending Feb. 25, 2017), salty snacks in particular generated more than $27.8 billion in sales.
Americans will continue to eat, and if at all possible, they will continue to eat as well as their budget allows. That appears to be a good sign for the meat industry.
Confections and snacks compete for the same share-of-stomach, but are considered separate categories. 2016 saw the lines between the two areas blur as confection innovation picked up taste, texture, and ingredient cues from snacks.
