Cardiovascular Health
A number of food and drinks come under the umbrella term of cardiovascular health, and not only with the traditional focus on fat and cholesterol reduction. More recently, salt or sodium reduction has been included. Omega-3 fatty acids, including DHA, are also now widely associated with heart health, even though they have other physiological benefits. Specific heart-health claims are much less frequently used than other, more general, passive claims, featured on less than 1% of global food and drinks launches in 2012. The U.S., with its relatively high level of interest in heart health, does outperform the global total, however, with heart-health claims used on nearly 2% of launches in 2012. Breakfast cereals were the most popular category for heart-health claims, with nearly 18% of the global total in 2012—ahead of nuts and seeds, which have focused more strongly on a heart-health positioning in recent years. Their share of the global total stood at 4.6%, taking them ahead of juices and juice drinks, dairy alternative drinks and tea, all relatively close together with 4.1, 3.9 and 3.8%, respectively.

Grape Seed Extract
Studies show that Polyphenolics’ MegaNatural-BP grape seed extract helps to reduce blood pressure by relaxing blood vessel walls. In the results of a recent randomized double blind, placebo-controlled study, published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Nutrition Sciences, UC Davis researchers describe how grape seed extract significantly lowered systolic and diastolic blood pressure among 32 pre-hypertensive adults after just eight weeks. MegaNatural-BP was chosen for use in this study. “This study showed that the extract when administered orally at a dose of 300 mg daily resulted in a significant reduction in blood pressure,” commented lead researcher C. Tissa Kappagoda, professor, director Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, UC Davis. While acknowledging that the study was small, the researchers commented that this is evidence that the polyphenolic compounds present in grape seed extract, “could form the non-pharmaceutical basis for managing hypertension.”

Antioxidants, Palm Tocotrienols
Sytrinol is a safe, effective ingredient that supports healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and has been shown in research to positively influence these levels in 30 days. Sytrinol is comprised of a blend of powerful antioxidants including polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs)—tangeretin and nobiletin—and a range of palm tocotrienols (alpha, delta and gamma). Multiple clinical trials demonstrated that Sytrinol reduced total cholesterol by 30%; while LDL cholesterol was reduced by 27%, and triglycerides were reduced by 34% when compared to placebo.

Salmon Oil
Now available in softgels, Roxlor’s OmeGo is a unique salmon oil with a wide spectrum of beneficial components. Standard fish oils focus only on Omega 3 fatty acids and most particularly, on DHA and EPA. However, there are many other important health components found in salmon than just Omega 3s. Because OmeGo is not distilled and never oxidized, the Omega 5, 6, 7, and 9 fatty acids remain intact. The astaxanthin and natural vitamins found in salmon also are present in OmeGo. This provides not only the benefits of Omega 3, but also the heart, cholesterol, blood sugar, skin and antioxidant benefits of the other components as well. OmeGo has been shown in both animal and human clinical studies to reduce markers of oxidized LDL-GP. Oxidized LDL-GP has been shown to be a more accurate marker for cardiovascular disease than LDL levels alone. Studies with OmeGo have also shown it to be more effective than DHA, fish oil and krill oil in lowering oxidized LDL-GP.

Lonza offers DHAid, a concentrated and purely vegetarian source of omega-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It is produced from a proprietary strain of microalgae through a controlled fermentation process. DHAid is an environmentally friendly source of DHA as it is manufactured using renewable resources. DHA is a type of omega-3 fatty acid that is used by our body as a building block for cell membranes and thus plays an important role in membrane fluidity, flexibility and permeability. Various scientific studies demonstrate that a high intake of omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, correlates with heart health. DHAid is available in liquid and powder forms, non-allergenic, free of potential contaminants, uses no chemical solvents for production and is GRAS affirmed.

Lycopene Benefits
Lycopene belongs to the carotenoid family and is a powerful carotenoid quencher of singlet oxygen, being 100 times more efficient in test tube studies than Vitamin E. Lycopene has been reported to significantly lower LDL oxidation in human blood. This suggests that lycopene might have an importance in preventing heart disease, which involves oxidized LDL cholesterol. Lycopene is concentrated in certain organs of the body, and in particular the prostate gland. Several studies have linked lycopene with a lower risk of prostate cancer. The Washington Count study, found that men with the most lycopene in their blood halved their risk of prostate cancer compared to those with the least. For those under 70 years old, the benefit was even greater. Allied Biotech Corp. manufactures lycopene under the Lycotene brand name, which is offered in both liquid and powdered forms.

Reduce Sodium
Sodium chloride (NaCl) is an essential nutritional ingredient. However, excess consumption can cause serious health problems. Many worldwide health experts recommend that the average daily consumption be reduced by at least 30%, resulting in consumer demand for healthier options. SPRINGER yeast extracts can replace up to 30% of salt in recipes for soups, sauces and dressings. The Springer 2000 range of yeast extracts, with its natural nucleotide content, provides an intense umami taste and functions as an efficient clean- label alternative to MSG in many savory foods including snacks. Bio Springer manufactures a yeast extract containing 20% natural I+G, which is the highest nucleotide level that can be achieved naturally, offering an even stronger umami taste, particularly suitable in formulations requiring replacement of high MSG content. The Springer 2000 range is produced locally at Bio Springer’s Cedar Rapids, Iowa, plant. SPRINGER yeast extracts boost the flavor of foods without significant modification to flavor profiles. The flavor intensity of foods is reinforced, resulting in less need for added salt.
