On February 18, 2005, the FDA responded to LycoRed Natural Products Industries' GRAS submission covering LycoMato[r] oleoresin and the LycoPen[r] formulations. Dr. Laura Taranatino, director of the Office of Food Additive Safety, stated, “Based on the information provided by LycoRed, as well as other information available to the FDA, the agency has no questions at this time regarding LycoRed's conclusion that their tomato lycopene extracts (1.5% and 6%) and crystallized tomato lycopene extract are GRAS under the intended conditions of use.” This paves the way for more food manufacturers to use these ingredients for food fortification.
