SunOpta Receives Water Quality Award

October 25/Chelmsford, Mass./SunOpta Press Release -- SunOpta Ingredients Group received the prestigious Industrial Water Quality Achievement Award from the Water Environment Federation (WEF), an international not-for-profit technical and educational water quality organization. The award was presented at a ceremony during WEF’s annual technical exhibition and conference (WEFTEC) in New Orleans.

The Industrial Water Quality Achievement Award is presented to the corporation that best demonstrates significant, lasting and measureable excellence in water quality through design and operation of an industrial wastewater, pretreatment or source prevention program.

The award was accepted by Loren Larson, manager of Water Sustainability, representing SunOpta’s fiber manufacturing plant in Cambridge, Minn. SunOpta earned the award by reducing water use by approximately 17 million gallons in a 12-month period and dramatically improving the water quality of its wastewater discharge. These changes in water utilization also realized energy savings equivalent to at least 10 million cubic feet of natural gas. Modifications to the plant’s wastewater system also resulted in reduced generation of biosolids by 20% in year-over-year volume.
