At this year’s IFT Food Expo, Omya launched the Omyafood™ range, which consists of tailor-made particles for powdered protein and vitamin premixes. Another focus was on the Omya-Cal® high purity calcium carbonate ingredients. Mined in Amboy, Calif., and processed in Superior, Ariz., these minerals impress with a favorable combination of lead, cadmium and aluminum compared with leading US competitors.

The innovative minerals act as flow aids and anti-caking agents—while they minimize dusting. Thanks to the consistent porosity of the particles, they offer a carrier functionality of up to 55% loading capacity for vitamins, flavors and other actives. Moreover, Omyafood™ has a very high elemental calcium content of approximately 40%, making it the most concentrated and highly bioavailable source of calcium on the market. As such, it can be used as an efficient fortification agent, allowing calcium-related claims to be made.
Last but not least, Omyafood™ 100-OG particles are not in a nano size range and neutral in taste. Due to the natural ingredient’s multiple benefits, it is possible to avoid several synthetic additives, helping to provide a cleaner label on the end product.
Furthermore, visitors interested in high quality calcium carbonate ingredients had the opportunity to talk to leading experts on Omya-Cal®. The mineral is sustainably sourced in California, certified organic and available in a variety of sizes, adding nutritional and processing benefits to both food and pharmaceutical applications.
Processing takes place in the company’s state-of-the-art Arizona plant, which is Food Safety System 22000:2010-certified and recognized by the US FDA as a registered drug establishment. An advanced processing method incorporates a precise thermal inactivation step that heats ground limestone to ensure food safety and quality. Omya-Cal® range products are manufactured according to GMP and HACCP requirements and certified as kosher and halal.
