August 29, 2007/Latin America News Digest-- Cargill Inc. plans to acquire a Colombian producer of vegetable oil, the company's director for Latin America, Sergio Rial, said on August 28, 2007.

The operation could be completed by the end of 2007, Rial added. He broke the news at an agriculture seminar in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo.

Cargill also plans to expand its operations in Argentina, Rial said. According to him, Brazil must slow down the production of ethanol, since at present the supply is higher than the demand for the product. Brazil is the leading producer of ethanol worldwide.
