As the low-carb dieting craze continues, more meat-focused products are being developed for the marketplace. While not all are marked to promote a low-carb diet, the dieting group clearly is driving the rapid development of the products. Hillshire Farm (Cincinnati), whose recently redesigned label can be found on its new products, adds two heat-and-serve meats to its line: Lit'l Meatballs in Marinara Sauce and Lit'l Smokies in BBQ Sauce.
From ConAgra (Omaha, Neb.), Pemmican Steak Tips are bite-sized beef nuggets which are 95% fat-free and high in protein. The company hopes to draw in female consumers with the tenderness of the jerky. Clearwater, Fla.-based Casual Gourmet has added a descriptor to its sausage varieties: “great for low-carb diets.” Varieties available are Sundried Tomato & Herb Chicken Sausage and Hot Italian Chicken Sausage.
